'The Minors' is told through the inner monologues of Sam, a smart and slightly anxious teenage girl, and Nick, a former local baseball star in his late 20s. Almost stream-of-consciousness, but clear and readable prose lets the reader experience the thoughts behind the actions each character takes, which on the surface may seem ill-considered. It's an impressive feat to make the reader feel empathy for Nick, who tends to make a mess of his personal relationships and his life in general. The confusion of teenage sexuality is as realistically depicted here as in anything I've read. As the plot brings Nick and Sam closer together, other well-drawn characters round out the story and highlight how hard it is to understand another person's motivation. But their complex relationship is really the heart of the book and what makes it memorable.
Without giving too much away, the plot of this book is killer. The story line between the daughter and mother, the thread between the daughter and the contractor AND the father...I mean it twists you up and you can't wait to get to the next chapter.
Ludovici creates a compelling portrait of two narrators still finding their place in the world a self-involved teenage girl and a twenty-something washed up high school baseball player who never made it out of his hometown. His depiction of the young girl is especially on point, and the male narrator experiences true character growth through his interactions with the girl and her family. Scenes involving trauma are depicted thoughtfully and powerfully, which I find to be a key component in any book that includes that type of plot twist. As a whole, this book will grab you and not let go. And if you’re a music fan, keep an eye on the chapter titles; you’re in for a little bonus treat.
An achingly tender and occasionally uncomfortable coming-of-age story with wonderfully textured and beautifully flawed characters. Nick is the kind of character I love to hate, but Ludovici's masterful writing has you fully rooting for him by the end of his journey from self-involved jerk to...well, less self-involved jerk. Pulled along in his wake is young Samantha Heller, pressing up against her own adulthood, trying her best to hurry it along as young women are so wont to do. This is a promising debut and I look forward to seeing what this new author has in store for us next.
This book is a plenty of fun! The characters are realistic and the dialogues are excellent. Val, Sam, and Nick are one of those characters that you get attached to quickly. One more thing, this book is funny. I mean really funny! Great read!
A vivid, compelling read about realistic characters who manage to both engage and exasperate the reader. The third act twist left me unable to put it down, and I finished the last quarter of it or so in one sitting. Good, good stuff that seems like it might play out in a number of predictable ways, and then doesn't.
A poignant coming of age story and character study of Sam, a 16-year-old high schooler finding her life uprooted and Nick, a 24-year-old carpenter uprooted after a failed career in minor baseball. Ludovici brought depth and nuance to both characters, navigating the reader through a journey that changes both forever. Beautifully written and worth the read.
