I finished this novel mostly because I am a fan of Julie Klassen and appreciate her writing and research into the period. Her novels are not always about beautiful aristocrats with perfect lives. Some of the people are beautiful, some are aristocratic, and some are perfect, but Klassen never hesitates to examine what happens to people of the regency period who not only make poor decisions for their own lives but who also make decisions that will impact their positions in society. The results are often fascinating. I first found Klassen with a free copy of The Apothecary's Daughter offered by Amazon. I went on to love Girl in the Gatehouse, Maid of Fairbourne Hall, and The Tutor's Daughter. The Secret of Pembrooke Park reminded me of the gothic romances of Victoria Holt, albeit with a Christian viewpoint. For readers looking to begin reading Klassen, I recommend any of the previous novels--in fact, begin with any of Klassen's novels other than The Painter's Daughter and Lady Maybe.
I have no problem with characters who have made poor choices in their lives. For Christian novels this usually sets up a story of redemption, grace, and God's love. Klassen has certainly dealt with these themes in the past, to better effect. The Painter's Daughter and Lady Maybe dealt with two young women who made poor choices but who do not seem to be overly sorry about those choices. I got the feeling that they would likely choose to make the same choices again, if they had to go back again. Both novels also deal with young women who have two men seeking their favor. Lady Maybe has a married man vying for the main character's affections, and The Painter's Daughter deals with two brothers who love the same woman. I'm sorry, but there is an ick factor that I had to set aside in order to read both books. I've not had to do that before when reading a Klassen book. In The Painter's Daughter I felt more sorry for Stephen than anything else. He was in love with a woman who wanted his brother and ultimately had to raise his niece as his own. He was a swoon worthy hero who made me sad for him.

The Painter Daughter edition by Julie Klassen Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

As beautifully written as an exhibition of fine art, "The Painter's Daughter" chronicles the very eventful life of Sophie Dupont as she precariously navigates her life choices upon learning that she is with child. After receiving notice that Wesley Overtree has impulsively left for Italy without a single promise for their future, she is understandably stricken with guilt, fear, and uncertainty. Quite providentially, Wesley's brother Stephen is made aware of her circumstances, and proceeds to make an incredulous offer of marriage. The fearsome Captain is as different from his romantic, carefree brother as night is from day, but Sophie feels safe with the notorious military man and decides to accept his proposal, if in name only.

Captain Stephen Overtree never expected to marry, but when the beautiful painter's daughter crosses his path, he is inextricably drawn to the delicate, shattered young woman whom his brother used for his own pleasure and presumably left forsaken. Stephen has a short leave of absence from his regiment and transports his new bride home to his family where he hopes that she will be safe while he is away. What no one ever expected was a dire prediction of the future from a curious inhabitant, and a premature reappearance of the artist brother, prohibiting Stephen and Sophie from firmly sorting out their growing feelings for one another, when the captain is suddenly retrieved for active duty.

Once again, Sophie has decisions to make that will affect the lives and future of an entire family. Will she honor her marriage vows or give in to the incessant appeals from someone she once imagined to love? Julie Klassen has artfully captured an inspiring story onto the pages of this newest release.
Julie Klassen is one of my favorite authors, and books like The Painter's Daughter justify that sentiment. Sophie is the unappreciated, often ignored and criticized daughter of a portrait painter and his second wife (a greedy, pretentious woman who is barely tolerable). She falls in love with one of her father's students, a wealthy, first-born son of an aristocratic family. Wesley Overtree deserts her for the promise of travel and adventure, not knowing she is pregnant with his child. When his younger brother, Capt. Stephen Overtree is sent to bring Wesley home, he feels himself responsible for Wesley's mistakes and attempts to do right by Sophie and her unborn child.

Klassen allows us to view all perspectives of the consequences of Sophie and Wesley's indiscretions and the price they all pay for it. She didn't once resort to unrealistic coincidences to fill in plot holes or force her characters into boxes their previous actions didn't fit. Her story is seamless, with the quality writing I've come to expect from her. The story ends as it should, on a satisfactory note that rewards the reader with a feeling that the love that developed between Sophie and Stephen would last a happy lifetime.

This story has strong Christian themes, so if morality isn't your thing, look elsewhere.
